Drama as Senate rejects creation of armed forces commission

The was mild drama Wednesday during plenary at the Nigerian Senate as a bill seeking to create armed forces commission was rejected.

Enyinnaya Abaribe who sponsored the bill explained that the commission is needed to deepen federal character in the appointment of service chiefs and other heads of security agencies.

His submission was rejected by majority of lawmakers who said the move will politicize the military if passed into law.

Despite majority rejecting the bill through a voice vote, the sponsor refused to back down accusing Ahmad Lawan, Senate President, of influencing the decision of members.

Mr Lawan immediately called for a closed door session still ongoing as at press time when the session turned rowdy.
