The annual vacation of Nigerian judges will not prevent Nnamdi Kanu, detained leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) from appearing in court, his lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has said.
Mr Kanu extradited back to Nigeria from Kenya was scheduled to appear in court on July 26 but speculations in some quarters suggested that court sitting may not hold due to the vacation expected to be over in September.
A federal high court in Abuja ordered that he be remanded in custody of the State Security Service (SSS) and brought to court next week Monday.
The fugitive, who fled the country in 2017 when soldiers invaded his Afaraukwu residence in Abia State, is being tried on charges of treasonable felony.
Mr Ejiofor who leads his legal team in a Facebook post on Friday said his client will still appear in court as scheduled.
“We have just received a confirmation from Federal Federal High Court Abuja, that Hearing on Our Client’s case above referred will still go on as earlier schedulde on Monday next week being the 26th Day of July 2021,” the lawyer noted. “Remember Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and the entire Legal team in your prayers.”
Meanwhile, Abubakar Malami, Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) has warmed IPOB members against attending the court sitting.
Mr Malami warned that his office and security agencies have concluded plans to deal with any member of the seccessionist group seen in or around the court premises.
