Democracy day: FG declares Friday public holiday

The Federal Government has declared this coming Friday as public holiday to mark this year’s democracy day.

Formally celebrated on May 29, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari shifted it to June 12 to in 2018.

Mr Buhari made the change in honour of the memory of Moshood Abiola, who won the June 12, 1993 election that was annulled by the military regime of Ibrahim Babangida.

Mr Abiola eventually died in detention on July 8, 1998, while being held for declaring himself president over the annulled poll.

The public holiday declaration is contained in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of Interior Ministry,  Georgina Ehuriah, Monday evening, on behalf of Rauf Aregbesola, Interior Minister.
