Declare #EndSARS judicial panels across Nigeria illegal, Police begs court

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has approached a federal high court in Abuja urging it to disband judicial panels set up by state governments to probe alleged police brutality.

Some state governments, in response to the demand of citizens demanding police extensive reforms in the country, set up judicial panels to look into various petitions against the force, particularly the now scrapped Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The panels have began sitting and are yet to conclude investigations and tender their various recommendations but the police in Abuja has instituted a lawsuit demanding its declaration as unconstitutional, reports The Nation.

In suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1492/2020, the police sought to quash the panels across all states arguing that state authorities have no powers to hear allegations of wrongdoings against police officers, saying only the institution itself could administer personnel issues.

The police action could frustrate ongoing investigations by judicial panels set up to look into the atrocious acts of force personnel.
