Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, says he has been receiving death threats since he became the substantive head of the anti-graft agency.
Mr Bawa appointed into the position in February stated this on Tuesday while featuring on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
Citing a recent threat to his life, the anti-graft czar said he has also being receiving death threats even from those who have no issues with the Commission under him.
“Last week, I was in New York, as all Nigerians are aware of. A very senior citizen received a phone call from somebody that is not even under investigation,” Mr Bawa claimed. “What the caller said to him on the phone is that; he is going to kill the EFCC chairman.
“He said, ‘I am going to kill him. I am going to kill him’. This is to tell you how bad it is. It is actually real. Corruption can fight back,” he added.
Mr Bawa was appointed to lead the agency after a report allegedly indicting former acting EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu, for corruption was submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mr Magu has denied claims of being corrupt, accusing powers that be, led by Abubakar Malami, Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), of masterminding his ousting from office.
Mr Malami had written an indicting report against the ex-EFCC boss which prompted the set up of the panel that submitted its report on November with its findings yet to be made public.
