Lifestyle Audit: EFCC, ICPC to begin probe of Nigerians living flamboyant lifestyles: Presidency

The presidency has hinted of plans by anti-graft agencies in the country to begin the probe of Nigerians living flamboyant lifestyles.

Presidential aide, Lauretta Onochie, who  announced this in a tweet on Monday, said it is now legal to investigate Nigerians living above their source of income.

When he took over power in 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari pushed for the policy but could not successfully implement the initiative which also sought the establishment of special tribunals to try such cases.

Civil society groups in country kicked against the plan saying it will be abused, but Ms Onochie said yesterday that the policy is now has legal backings and will be implemented by various anti-graft agencies, particularly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

“Lifestyle Audit is now legal in Nigeria,” the social media aide said, “Those who flaunt lifestyles they cannot afford can now be investigated by any of the graft agencies to produce evidence of the sources of their wealth. You can now be called upon to explain how you acquired certain properties.”
