Buhari Extends Tenure Of Acting CJN Mohammad

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the tenure of Tanko Mohammad, the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The top jurist was appointed in January after a controversial suspension was slammed against his predecessor, Walter Onnoghen, who was accused of not declaring some assets traced to him.

Mr Buhari while suspending Mr Onnoghen, appointed Mohammad to oversee the affairs of the third tier of government in acting capacity.

In a report published on Premium Times, the online news medium, citing a statement from a spokesman of the National Judicial Council (NJC), Soji Oye, reported that the president has extended the tenure of the top jurist.

Mr Oye was quoted to have said the NJC has given its nod to the president’s recommendation that Mohammad continues in office in acting capacity.

The spokesperson said the decision was taken on Thursday and the approval has been sent the president.

This was further confirmation by the personal assistance to the president, Bashir Ahmed who shared the report through his social media accounts.

Mr Onnoghen has been convicted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) which removed him from office and also prevented him from holding any public office for a duration of 10 years.

The ousted jurist despite willingly resigning from his position has appealed the judgement at the Court of Appeal.
