Nnamdi Kanu pleads not guilty to fresh charges as court adjourns to February 16

Nnamdi Kanu, detained leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has pleaded not guilty to the fresh charges preferred against him by the federal government.

The Buhari administration, for the second time, amended the treasonable felony and terrorism charges against Mr Kanu, increasing it to fifteen from seven.

At the resumed court sitting on Wednesday, the separatist leader said he was innocent of all the charges and complained that some of the amended charges were similar.

Immediately after that, the prosecution team led by Shuaibu Labaran told the court that he was ready for the commencement of trial but the defense team led by Mike Ozekhome argued that two applications he filed challenging the propriety of Kanu’s trial as well as competence of the charge and his bail yesterday be heard first.

After listening to the arguments, Justice Binta Nyako, agreed with the defense to hear the first application but rejected the second application which is about the bail of Mr Kanu.

“As for the second motion (on the issue of bail), I don’t even want to talk about it, at least not at this stage,” Justice Nyako held.

The court subsequently adjourned till February 16 to hear the pending application.
