The Federal Government has apologised to Nigerians for demanding that citizens should visit financial institutions in the country for self-certification.
The apology is contained in a statement on its verified Twitter handle, adding that the request was not for all bank account holders.
“We apologize for the misleading tweets (now deleted) that went up yesterday, regarding the completion of self-certification forms by Reportable Persons. The message contained in the @firsNigeria,” the apology read.
“Notice does not apply to everybody. FIRS will issue appropriate clarification shortly,” it added.

Through the same medium, the federal government had requested holders of accounts in financial institutions in the country to visit, obtain, fill and submit the said self-certification form.
Shortly after the announcement, Nigerians criticised the decision, querying of what information it needed that’s not obtainable in the Bank Verification Number (BVN), National Identify, Voters Registration, among others.
