Biafra, Yoruba nation agitators are noisemakers – Buhari

Secessionists in the country have been described as noisemakers by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr Buhari who gave the description on Wednesday in an interview aired on Channels TV where he spoke on other national issues said agitators resort to noise making in order to get a better deal.

“No, I don’t,” the president responded when queried if he feared that Nigeria’s unity was under threat of secession. “I don’t because from January 15, 1966, I’ve been in all the troubles in the country, including being in detention for more than three years. I think Nigerians just make noise to get (a) better deal.

“They (Nigerians) know that we are better together than being separate. I sincerely believe that. They just make noise to get (a) better deal.”

After he took over power in 2015, decades-long secessionist agitations escalated in the Southern part of the country with Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo taking the lead in South-East and South-West geo-political zones respectively.

In June 2021, Mr Kanu who was mysteriously abducted from Kenya is being detained at the headquarters of the State Security Service (SSS) and facing charges bordering on terrorism and insulting the president.

Mr Buhari has rebuffed pleas for a political solution concerning the Abia-born separatist leader.

Mr Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho is in custody in Benin Republic where the federal government is using all its arsenals to ensure he is repatriated back for alleged gun-running trial.
