The decision of the Ondo State government to oust herdsmen residing in forests across the state is wrong, says Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna central lawmaker.
Rotimi Akeredolu, the Ondo state governor had on Monday issued a 7-day vacation order to herders living inside forest reserves in the state.
Citing security reasons which most have been traced to violent herdsmen, he advised cattle breeders who wants to continue business to register with the state government or quit residing in the bushes.
While Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) kicked against the order, the presidency warned the state governor about linking criminal activities to herdsmen.
Reacting to the development, the former Kaduna central lawmaker said though he appreciates the efforts of the governor, asking herdsmen to leave the forests is wrong.
He advised the governor not to pass judgement on others over the misconduct of a few criminal elements.
“My Dear Governor Akeredolu,
I’m quiet aware of the security challenges facing your state,” the ex-lawmaker said Wednesday morning on Facebook.
“I appreciate your efforts,but it’s outrightly and completely wrong to ask ALL cattle herders to leave Ondo forests.
“The sins of a criminal few should not affect the law abiding and peaceful ones who have the right to live and move freely in all parts of our country.
“Efforts must continue to be made to deal with those who breach the law,while respecting and protecting the rights of the innocent.
