APC caretaker committee constitutional: Umahi

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State says the caretaker committee of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is constitutional.

Mr Umahi who defected late last year to the ruling party stated this in a statement by his media aide, Francis Nwaze.

Mr Nwaze said his principal made the comment while accessing the state-wide congresses of the party organised in his domain.

The ruling party held its ward congresses nationwide despite calls questioning the legality of the committee following the recent decision of the supreme court on the election victory of Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state.

Dissecting the judgment, a junior minister and two presidential aides advised that the exercise be suspended pending the removal of governor Mai Mala-Buni of Yobe State who doubles as the committee head which Umahi said is constitutional.

“When that opinion was expressed, I had to go through the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the constitution of the party,” the governor said. “A section of the party’s constitution empowers the National Executive Committee to set up a caretaker committee and this caretaker committee is to do the job of any of the organs of the party where there is vacancy or vacancies.”
