2023 Presidency: South can’t get power by threatening North – El-rufai

Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna State has said that threatening the Northern region won’t let it relinquish power in 2023.

With President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration winding down in 2023, power is expected to return to the Southern part of the country but some individuals from the president’s region are averse to the practice the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) adopted while it held sway from 1999 to 2015.

They are insisting on retaining power, a position the 17 Southern States Governors rejected, prompting them to threaten that power must return to the South.

In an interview with Daily Trust, the Kaduna helmsman said the North will not relinquish power to the South continues to threaten it, describing the approach as folly.

He said rotational presidency can only be achieved through dialogue and not threats.

“We are not saying there cannot be a rotational presidency,” Mr El-rufai said. “It can be done but you have to come and sit with the politicians in the north and dialogue and then we agree to give our support to the south but no one has the right to sit in Lagos or Port Harcourt and say whether northerners want it or not, they must relinquish power to the south, that is wrong. It is not how we do politics and in fact, it is foolish.
