Enyinnaya Abaribe, lawmaker representing Abia South senatorial district at the Nigerian Senate, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to stop giving excuses for failures at any given opportunity.
Mr Buhari in his new year broadcast this morning while speaking on rising insecurity blamed past administrations and said the situation was better under his administration, a claim faulted by most Nigerians including the Senate which has asked him to rejig the security architecture of the nation.
Although he has promised to do so, no definite date has been set for the security reorganisation.
Reacting to the blame game of the president, the Abia lawmaker reminded the president that he was elected into the position to remedy the situation rather than dishing out unending excuses.
He added that the lawmaking arm of government and particularly the minority caucus at the Senate which he leads was ready to work with him in finding lasting solutions to rising insecurity.
“The legislature, particularly the minority caucus is ready to cooperate with the presidency in any sincere and genuine effort to tackle insecurity in our country and keep our people safe,” Abaribe said in a Friday statement.
“Nonetheless, President Muhammadu Buhari must as a fact face governance and stop making excuses at every turn, especially his penchant at making references to 2015 as reasons why he fails to perform.
“It does not end at making broadcast, but in exhibiting genuine seriousness in governance for all Nigerians.
“The President is elected to provide governance, by so doing he must be ready to proffer solutions, right wrongs where it exists and solve problems besetting the country in every facet and not always relapse to advancing excuses to explain away palpable failures.
“As for us in the minority caucus, we are willing as always to cooperate with the presidency in any sincere and genuine effort to provide good governance to Nigerians,” he added.
Meanwhile, presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, has advised Nigerians, particularly critics of his principal to tune down detractions to his principal. He said doing so will enable the president work hard.
Mr Adesina said rather than criticise Buhari for maladministrations, his detractors should join praise singers of the administration in hailing the president.
